About Nicole Dean
Nicole Dean, based in Sedona, AZ, is an accomplished writer and editor. She has two decades of professional experience in non-fiction and creative writing, book publishing, and the teaching and coaching of writing. Nicole has ghostwritten and edited numerous books, many of which have become best sellers and have won industry awards.
Nicole has earned a BFA in studio art and a BA and MA in English from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). One of her early jobs was as a portrait artist at Disneyland, creating pastel drawings of visitors to the park. Returning in 1992 to CSUF to begin work on her master’s degree in medieval literature, she eventually turned to the written word as her main medium of creative expression. She has produced a variety of academic papers, short stories, poems, and popular articles.
In addition to the development of her own writing abilities, Nicole became keenly interested in helping others to develop their own writing skills. During her first year of graduate school, she began working many hours per week in CSUF’s Writing Center, where she helped students understand and refine their academic writing abilities. Based on the quality of her tutoring work, she was chosen as one of only a handful of graduate student Teaching Associates, thus giving her the opportunity to instruct a section of Freshman Composition.
After graduation with a master’s degree, Nicole accepted a lecturing position at CSUF, where she continued to teach composition and literature courses for the next eleven years. While there, she served as the supervisor of the campus Writing Center and coordinated the English educational component of Summer Bridge, a program to help freshman students from underrepresented groups adjust to college life. She has taught at other Southern California colleges, including Citrus College, Chapman College, and Mount San Antonio College.
While working as a college English instructor, Nicole began to publish her own work as a freelance writer. She became a regular contributor of feature articles to the magazine Body and Brain, writing on such topics as nutrition, education, spirituality, mind-body exercise, and the aging brain. She also edited and developed many of the other articles in the magazine, eventually serving as Associate Editor. From 2007 to 2010, she worked as Senior Editor at BEST Life Media, where she was involved in all aspects of book publication and promotion.
Through her work as an artist, educator, editor, and writer, Nicole has developed a special interest in the creative process. In 2008, she developed the Right Brain Creativity Workshop, which she presented multiple times in Arizona, California, and Texas. Now, she dedicates her time to her own creative work while also helping others express themselves through the written word.
